Cask Ownership - FAQs
At Hinch Distillery, we’re committed to providing a transparent and rewarding cask ownership experience. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about your cask, from maturation and storage to next steps. If you need anything further, our team is always here to help.
Can I discuss my cask with the team?
Yes, absolutely. Our team is always happy to talk through your cask, explain the maturation process, and answer any general questions you may have.
Can you provide a current valuation of my cask?
We’re unable to provide valuations or market pricing guidance. Cask ownership is not presented as a financial investment, but rather as a premium whiskey ownership experience. It is widely recognised that whiskey develops in character and potential over time as it matures. We are not authorised to provide financial advice or investment guidance. No returns are guaranteed.
Is there an option to sell or transfer my cask?
If you are considering transferring ownership, we can discuss next steps with you. There are many 3rd party brokers on the market who can assist you in selling your cask.
Is it better to hold onto my cask for longer?
In many cases, yes. Additional maturation allows the whiskey to develop greater depth, complexity and character. Many owners choose to continue ageing their cask to allow it to reach its full potential.
How do I know my cask is secure and properly managed?
All casks are stored on-site in our bonded warehouse and recorded in a secure cask ledger. Each owner receives a certificate of ownership, ensuring full traceability and transparency at every stage.
It is stored in a facility that is fully HMRC-approved, ensuring compliance with all government regulations regarding bonded storage and duty suspension.
In addition, the cask is subject to independent audits twice a year, providing regular verification that it is being securely stored, accurately recorded and properly managed at all times.
Can I visit or view my cask?
Yes. You are welcome to visit your cask and this must be done strictly by appointment only.
We request 5 working days’ notice for any cask visit. Hinch is a working distillery and visits will not be possible at times due to production or annual leave scheduling.
Are there ongoing costs associated with my cask?
Yes. Your cask includes an initial period of complimentary warehousing. After this period, annual warehousing and insurance charges apply to ensure your cask continues to be securely stored.
What are the warehousing and insurance costs?
Current costs are £80 per cask, per year, reviewed periodically and aligned with inflation. These charges cover secure bonded storage and insurance.
What happens if I don’t respond to warehousing renewal requests?
To ensure continued safe storage and compliance with warehouse regulations, we require confirmation of your preferred option. We will always contact you in advance, but timely responses are important to avoid any disruption.
What options do I have once warehousing charges begin?
You can:
- Continue maturation (recommended)
- Bottle your cask
- Transfer ownership or explore sale options
Our team can guide you through each of these options.
What happens when I decide to bottle my cask?
We will guide you through the full bottling process, including timelines, costs and labelling options. Many owners choose to personalise their bottles, creating a unique and meaningful end-product.
Can I customise my bottles?
Yes. Depending on your programme, you may be able to personalise your bottle labels (for example, with a name or special message), subject to brand approval.
The label design (front, back and neck) for all complete bottlings will have common elements which signify the origin of the whiskey as the Hinch Whiskey Co. or Hinch Distillery. In addition, both the front and back labels will carry legal statutory information as required for the country of destination.
The front label will have a space provide within its design to allow the customer to add a personalised message (Cask Name) in written script to a maximum of thirty character spaces, with the identical personalised message repeated on every label within the same complete cask bottling. Other areas of the front label will also be over printed just prior to bottling to detail; ‘Bottling Date’, ‘Bottle Number’ from 1 to the final number bottled; Bottle Size and ABV %.
A complete bottling will be packaged in 6 x 70cl or 6 x 75cl outer cases dependent on the bottle size for the country of destination.
What type of whiskey is in my cask?
Your cask contains carefully produced Single Malt Triple Distilled Irish Whiskey filled into high-quality oak barrels. Full details relating to your specific cask are provided in your ownership documentation.
